The development of the electric vehicles (EV) market in the last years was very fast in the USA and Japan, thus Europe and Bulgaria should also catch up with the trends of this market, said the Bulgarian minister of economics, energy and tourism Traicho Traykov at the conference “Electric Vehicles - Challenges of the New Mobility” which took place on February 10-11 in Sofia, Bulgaria

In many European cities there is already charging infrastructure for EV. According to Mr. Traykov, EVs are a vital part of the development of smart grids. The Minister said that he is pleased that Bulgaria is one of the ninth EU countries which signed a declaration for the development of EVs.

One of the main challenges for the development of united EV market is already overcome – the unification of the charging devices.

European Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship Antonio Tajani said today, during a conference themed ‘Electromobiles – the challenges of the new mobility’ that he is very pleased by the fact that Bulgaria is among the first EU countries to join the EV market.

According to Commissioner Tajani, the development of the charging infrastructure for EVs should start from the big cities – such as Sofia, because they are very populated and the traffic there is very intense, having a huge negative impact on the urban area.

Mr. Tajani said that he is willing to help the development of the EV market in Bulgaria.

The mayor of Sofia, Mrs. Fandakova said today, that the main goal of Sofia for the next few years should be the improving of the city landscape.

She also stated, that the main accent will be on electric transport – the metro system, new trolleys, improving the tram infrastructure and, last, but not least – the charging infrastructure for EVs.

Mrs. Fandakova was pleased to announce that last year Sofia Municipality signed a memorandum for understanding with CEZ Bulgaria for the development of the charging infrastructure in the city central area.

The official part of the conference was closed by the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Mr. Boyko Borissov, who said that the country had very strong traditions in making electric lifters, but in the last two decades this know-how has been forgotten. He expressed his hope that this will emerge again and Bulgaria would be one of the leading manufacturers of EVs or components for EVs.
