The Energy Minister Temenujka Petkova told journalists at the Council of Ministers that the procedure for choosing an investor for Belene NPP has been developed and only small details remain to be specified. She commented on the Belene NPP after attending a meeting of the Energy Security Council at the Council of Ministers, BTA reports.

If, after reporting this procedure in the Council of Ministers and then to Parliament, there are no significant recommendations or amendments, there is no obstacles that by the end of the year the procedure is started, the minister said, adding that such a procedure usually goes on months.

The Parliament has mandated that the Energy Minister develops an investor selection procedure and proposes structuring for the project by 31 October 2018.

In response to a question, the minister said there were no new candidates for the project.

In response to a question about Gastrade's market test for the Liquefied Gas Terminal in Alexandroupolis today, the Minister said that Bulgaria supports any project that is related to the diversification of sources and routes for the supply of natural gas. She recalled that Bulgaria was able to participate in this project with a share of 25 per cent. We have found such a decision to participate in this company, which is within the framework of the Bulgarian Energy Holding. This is likely to be Bulgartransgaz, the minister added. She argues that the company as an operator has a commitment to develop the network will be the main driver to build a gas distribution center on the territory of Bulgaria.

At today's meeting of the Energy Security Council, the need to update the energy strategy on the gas side was presented. According to the Minister, this is due to the changed environment in terms of the infrastructure projects that are developing around Bulgaria - South Gas Corridor, Turkish Stream. "We want to preserve the strategic position of Bulgaria in the gas map of Europe by building the relevant infrastructure, which is essential for the realization and the concept of a gas distribution center," the Minister commented on the need to update the strategy.

She also informed that the Council discussed the possibility of setting up a gas exchange. This exchange must be set up in a separate subsidiary owned by Bulgartransgaz in order to develop the concept of a gas distribution center based on the building of the missing infrastructure to enable the supply of natural gas from different sources, and to build the natural gas exchange, which will be the main platform for market liberalization.

Asked whether the gas from the second Turkish flow pipeline will pass through Bulgaria, the minister said he hoped "things to develop in a way favorable to us all." For us it is extremely important that Bulgaria maintain its place on the gas map of Europe, the minister said. She added that anything related to the country's willingness to expand the gas transmission infrastructure will continue to be within the framework of European legislation and the requirements of the Third Liberalization Package.
