European Commission to Inspect Bulgaria’s Energy Sector
Exeperts will go through the legal framework and the structural components of the Bulgarian energy sector with the aim to identify its most acute issues to be tackled

Bulgaria’s Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism announced today that today it received a confirmation by the European Commission that the planned investigation of the Bulgarian energy sector will start next week. It will be led by representatives of the Directorate-General for Energy of the EC.
 
Experts will go through the legal framework and the structural components of the Bulgarian energy sector with the aim to identify its most acute issues to be tackled. The European experts will meet with the teams of the energy ministry and the state regulator, as well as with the management of some of the country’s leading energy companies. The inspection will concentrate on the following topics:
 
- Rights and independence of the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission
- The state-owned Bulgarian Energy Holding and its role on the internal energy market
- Structure and functioning of the national electricity market
- Structure and functioning of the national gas market, taking into account the diversification and the specifics of gas production
- Price calculation mechanisms in Bulgaria’s energy sector
 
The inspection was negotiated during the visit of PM Marin Raikov, vice PM Ekaterina Zaharieva and energy minister Asen Vasilev in Brussels.
