Cameron, Barroso Expected to Support Bulgaria’s Participation in Nabucco

After numerous redesigns resulting in shortened version of the EU-backed pipeline which should be an alternative to Russian imports, a detour through Italy was considered, thus bypassing Bulgaria

Bulgaria is expecting a solid support from the U.K. on the matters of securing diversified and cheaper gas supply. This became clear after Bulgaria’s PM Boiko Borisov met with his British counterpart David Cameron yesterday in London.

Oil giant BP which leads the consortium developing the Caspian gas field Shah Deniz II expected to fuel Europe in the next years would play a major role in securing Bulgaria’s part in Nabucco gas pipeline route. After numerous redesigns resulting in shortened version of the EU-backed pipeline which should be an alternative to Russian imports, a detour through Italy was considered, thus bypassing Bulgaria, Standart wrote. This would guarantee cheaper gas for Bulgaria, which otherwise would have to buy it from Turkey.

The main points that Borisov tackled during his meeting with Cameron were the advantages of choosing the shorter route via Bulgaria. State-owned company Bulgarstransgaz is appointed for the construction of the pipeline on Bulgarian territory.

Borisov is also expecting that the country receive the support of the head of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, who is due to visit Bulgaria by end-August.

“We are also working on the realization of South Stream gas pipeline. The joint venture for its construction should be a fact in October”, Borisov said.
