27.07.2012 11:49New Planned Nuclear Unit at Kozloduy Station Presented to FORATOM
Relentless critics of the planned 7th reactor continue, as the nuclear station is being prepared for extended operation of its two current units

The CEO of Bulgaria’s Kozloduy nuclear station Valentin Nikolov presented the plans for construction of a new 7th unit at the power plant to the FORATOM director general Jean-Pol Poncelet. Mr. Poncelet was on a visit in Bulgaria this week.
Nikolov highlighted that the government and the team of Kozloduy nuclear station were very engaged with bringing to reality the new planned nuclear reactor. Nikolov stated that the current site of Kozloduy and the qualified staff at Kozloduy would be a great advantage for the construction.
In March this year, following the cancellation of long-delayed second nuclear station in Belene, the cabinet of PM Boiko Borisov decided to use an almost ready WWER-1000 reactor produced by Russia’s Atomstroyexport in a 7th unit at the existing Kozloduy site.
Recent critics by Bulgarian nuclear expert such as Ivan Hinovski, head of the Bulgarian Atomic Forum, pointed out the legal precedent that would be constructing an entirely private reactor on a governmental site. Hinovski stated in a recent interview for Capital, that the decision to realize the project this way demonstrates “ignorance that would clash with legal hinders”.
The two running units at Kozloduy are currently prepared for extension of their operational life with 20 years. The units 5 and 6 are now due to close in 2017 and 2019, respectively.
