09.07.2012 12:22Burgas District Heating Utility Completes CO2 Contract with Denmark
According to the bilateral agreement signed in 2006, the Burgas district heating utility got financing for the introduction of a cogeneration system in the thermal power plant amounting to BNG 15 m (EUR 7.5 m). Toplofikatsia was obliged to sell the CO2 emissions it spared.

The Burgas district heating utility Toplofikatsia said it completed its duties on a contract with the Danish Environmental Protection Agency a year ahead of the contract deadline. In January 2012 Toplofikatsia eliminated the last quantities of CO2 that were set in the contract which spanned from 2008 to 2012.
According to the bilateral agreement signed in 2006, the Burgas district heating utility got financing for the introduction of a cogeneration system in the thermal power plant amounting to BNG 15 m (EUR 7.5 m). Toplofikatsia was obliged to sell the CO2 emissions it spared. On average ever since its operational start, the cogeneration system has spared 5000-6000 t of CO2 on monthly basis.
Being more environmentally sound is not the only advantage that the cogeneration brought. The reports of the heating utility show that cogeneration allowed for a 2% drop of heating prices, while natural gas became 65% more expensive since the introduction of the combined heat/electricity production system.
Tolpfikatsia produced 65% of its heating from the cogeneration.
