Citizens of Varna Await Decision on General Development Plan

The interest of the citizens was provoked by plans for massive construction in the city park known as the Sea Garden

About 200 people gathered in the City Hall at 10.00 h today where the City Council will decide on the general development plan of Varna. The police tried to stop a group of citizens willing to attend the event, but later they were allowed in the hall, Darik reported.

The interest of the citizens was provoked by plans for massive construction in the city park known as the Sea Garden. Civil organizations vowed to go on protest in the streets, if the council gives green light to a general development plan that allows construction of buildings and road infrastructure in the north part of the park. According to the NGO called Varna Breathes which is very active in these events, the general development plan aims at allowing the construction of a fancy residential district in this prime location which used to be exempt of almost any buildings. In the last few years the northern part of the park started to fill with small hotels and villas due to the restitution of land to private persons despite civil opposition.

Yesterday, a civil protest attended by at least 1000 concerned people took place in Varna. A protest of solidarity was also organized in Sofia even though it had a more limited attendance. Furthermore people from all parts of the country express their support for the conservation of the Sea Garden in the social networks.
