Projects worth more than BGN 120 m (about EUR 60 m) will be implemented with European funding, it became clear during the 23rd Assembly of the donors of the Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund in which Bulgarian economy, energy and tourism minister Delian Dobrev took part. Dobrev presented Bulgaria’s position which defends the need of more funding for energy efficiency. Eventually he managed to persuade the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to keep the facility’s non-nuclear part.

The Fund’s main purpose is to manage the gratuitous funding meant to minimize the negative effects of the early decommissioning of Bulgaria’s currently only operating nuclear station in Kozloduy.

66 Bulgarian municipalities were approved for funding for energy efficiency measures in 217 public buildings (hospitals, schools and kindergartens). The funding amounts to EUR 35.5 m.

Additional EUR 10.5 will be spent on improving street lights in 14 municipalities.
Sofia’s district heating utility Toploficatsia will receive EUR 1.5 m for feasibility study for a new RDF unit which will use the produce from the planned waste treatment plant in Bulgaria’s capital city.

Another EUR 15 m will be spent on the decommissioning of units 1-4 of Bulgaria’s sole nuclear power plant in Kozloduy.
