Today during a parliamentary sitting the gas pipeline project Nabucco, which is meant to bring Caspian gas to Europe, was pronounced a project of national importance by the Bulgarian PM’s. This key decision should speed up the construction of the pipe.
The environmental assessment of the Bulgarian stretch of Nabucco is also currently in progress.
Nabucco Gas Pipeline International GmbH. Managing director Reinhard Mitschek welcomed this engagement of the Bulgarian government. “Nabucco is the most advanced gas pipeline project from the South Corridor and is the most suitable and strategically needed option for Bulgaria’s gas supply diversification”, Mitschec sid in an official statement circulated today.
Despite the rising costs of the project which is competing with other regional gas pipes such as the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) for gas quantities from Azeri Shah Deniz II field, Bulgaria has confirmed its support for Nabucco on numerous occasions. The Bulgarian Energy Holding, which comprises several state-run energy companies, has to secure EUR 400 m for its part in the project.
