Turkey said Sunday it will build a third bridge over the Bosphorus Strait with state funds, having failed to attract a private firm to handle the multi-billion-dollar project, the Anatolia news agency reported, cited by AFP.
The government had planned to fund the project through concessions to the winning bidder, without using state funds, but will now have to extend the timeline and pay for it in stages, Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim said in a television interview carried by Anatolia.
"We are revising the project," Yildirim said. "We will do it stage by stage."
The road and rail bridge, the cost of which has been estimated at USD 6.0 billion (EUR 4.5 billion), would be part of a new motorway linking Eastern Thrace to Anatolia, bypassing Istanbul.
A first tender will now concern just the bridge and some 70 kilometres of the main road, Yildirim said.
"Because of the extent of the project, one Turkish firm might not be enough," he said, implying that a consortium that may even include foreign partners would be set up.
The original tender was cancelled after none of the 18 companies invited to bid had done so.
Yildirim announced plans to build the third bridge over the Bosphorus Strait, which connects the Asian and European sides of Istanbul, a huge metropolis of more than 13 million people, in 2010.
It will cross the Bosphorus from the north, near the Black Sea, and stretch more than a kilometer.
