As part of a study by dena (German Energy Agency) and rudena (Russian-German Energy Agency) in preparation for the Winter Olympics 2014 in Sochi, Drees & Sommer analyzed how the primary energy demand for the Olympic buildings could be reduced by up to 70 percent compared to the current Russian standard. This is in keeping with goals set by the International Olympic Committee and the Russian government and a law promulgated by the President of the Russian Federation at the end of 2009. These mandate immediate action to conserve energy with a target saving of some 40 percent.

The Drees & Sommer sustainability experts developed efficiency standards for Sochi and compared these with the technical standards currently in use. The following findings resulted:
•    Sochi Efficiency Standard I should be feasible based on established building technologies. Following completion, these properties would achieve a standard equivalent to that prescribed by the German Energy Conservation Ordinance (EnEV) 2005, and would result in an average reduction of primary energy demand of some 35 percent.
•    Sochi Efficiency Standard II comprises a combination of established and new building technologies, resulting in further opportunity for optimization. This corresponds to the current German standard (EnEV 2009) and results in a reduction of energy demand for heating by some 60 percent and of primary energy demand by up to 70 percent.

High-efficiency technologies
As a first step, the experts examined the potential for optimization of building shells and structural design. The application of high-efficiency technologies - such as heat recovery systems, the use of solar and ambient heat for heating and cooling of buildings, and modern equipment - will lead to further reductions in energy requirements.

Two climate zones in Sochi
The Olympic Park with stadiums, media centers and the Olympic Village will be built on the Black Sea coast where temperatures rarely fall below 6°C. In the Alpine Krasnaya Polyana region, the event will be held in the open at winter temperatures of around 0°C. Building solutions adapted to the climatic conditions were developed for the efficiency standards.

Long-term effects
Energy-efficient buildings should result in a reduction of energy demand and emissions during the 2014 Winter Olympics. However, the most significant savings will result from the long-term use of facilities as part of the sustainable development of the city of Sochi as a center for tourism and industry. In January 2010 the study was presented to political and industry representatives in Krasnodar. Drees & Sommer experts expect that a large part of the savings potential can be realized as planning and construction progress. Drees & Sommer is acting as a consultant to projects in the Olympic region.
