SolarHybrid has started expanding the German Finow Tower PV project after securing a EUR 111.5m contract to develop it into Europe’s largest solar power plant, Berliner Zeitung reported.

The expansion will add 60.2MW and increase the capacity of the plant to a total of 84.5MW. The Frankfurt-listed company claims that once work is complete, the plant will cover an area equal to 260 football fields.

Suntech will provide the PV modules following an agreement signed earlier this year to be SolarHybrid’s main supplier. Inverters will be provided by SMA, planning by Enerparc and installation by Conecon.

The first phase of the Finow Tower freestanding PV plant is located at the former Eberswalde military airport in the district of Schorfheide, northeast of Berlin. SolarHybrid says it hopes the expanded FinoTower will be up and running in December for plant-owner Deutscher Solarfonds Stabilität 2010.

Currently, Europe’s largest operating solar plant is in the province of Rovigo in Italy at 72MW. The plant was sold to First Research for EUR 230m last year providing Maryland-based SunEdison with relatively quick return on investment, renewable energy portal Recharge reported.

However, SolarHybrid announced last week that it has secured a large part of the financing for a further solar project in Italy that is set to become the largest in the country. Construction for that project is expected in November this year, and will be operational by March 2012.
