Bulgaria’s Major Cities Get Public Transport Modernization

The scheme is part of the Operational Programme Transport 2007 – 2013

Bulgaria’s capital Sofia and the six other major cities are to obtain new vehicles for their public transport.

The trolleybus park of Sofia is to be fully replaced by 2013, Lyubomir Hristov, deputy-mayor responsible for transport said today, as quoted by Focus News Agency.

In 2010, 30 new trolleybuses were bought, which currently represent about 30% of all trolleybuses in the capital. 50 more new such vehicles are to be bought with EU co-funding. Deputy-mayor Hristov said that the Capital City Autotransport company is to finalize a 5-year modernization program which allowed the introduction of 60 new buses in Sofia. He added that 3 new metro trains amounting to some BGN 20 mn (about EUR 40 mn) were bought.

Additionally, the capital will have green waves on its most heavy traffic points in Mladost, Lyulin and Ovcha Kupel Districts. New mobile CCTV would be introduced as well as of September on the south tangent of Sofia’s ring-road in order to prevent speeding.

Meanwhile, this Friday in Pleven is to be presented the project for integrated city transport which includes traffic control system, new eco-friendlier vehicles and bigger trolleybus depot. Similar measures are to be taken in the seven major cities of Bulgaria – Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Rousse, Stara Zagora and Pleven. The scheme is part of the Operational Programme Transport 2007 – 2013.
