Sofia: Transport, Renewables and Energy Efficiency Are Top Priorities

Sofia, being the capital and the biggest city in Bulgaria has the most difficulties to deal with, but it also is a main interest for investors, Mayor Yordanka Fandakova said today during the opening of the Smart City Conference, organized by 3Е-news.net.

Fandakova pointed out that transport, renewable energy and energy efficiency as the main tools of developing a sustainable city are the main priorities of the municipality. Currently 10 big projects are underway in Sofia such as the construction of new metro lines and other electrical transport innovations, sewage replacement and construction, velo alleys, etc. Mrs. Fandakova said that the rate of car accidents is expected to drop considerabledue to the car traffic decrease by 25% which is expected to follow the launch of 13 km of new metro lines in a little more than one year.

Later on Nona Karadzhova, Minister of environment and waters said that the development o modern waste treatmen t happens at slower rates, however she expressed her belief that by 2020 as much as 50% if the common waste and 70% of the construction waste in Sofia would be recycled.

The Ministry of economy, energy and tourism, represented by Vice-minister Evgeni Angelov, presented its plans for the capital city, according to which some 20% of the cars could be replaced by electric vehicles without having to build new electrical plants. Minister Angelov said that electric vehicles might also contribute to maintaining the peak electricity supply by their batteries.

Ekaterina Zaaharieva, Deputy-minister of regional development and public works stressed the need of an updated policy for energy efficiency in residential buildings in order to guarantee the sustainable development of the growing city.

The event was attended by business representatives which talked about their experience in sustainable development in cities. Bulgarian telecom MTel presented its smart grid application FlexNet.
