The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, met with Enel CEO Fulvio Conti at the G20 summit being held in Seoul. During the meeting, which lasted about 45 minutes, Conti announced to the Secretary-General that the Enel Group and its subsidiary Endesa would be participating in Global Compact LEAD. The programme brings together the top 100 global companies in corporate social responsibility, selected with the aim of developing the UN's global model for sustainable business practices.

Enel and Endesa have been involved for years in the Global Compact, the United Nations-sponsored forum that brings together governments, businesses, international agencies and civil society organisations to address critical issues of globalisation. The participating companies are committed to supporting ten universal principles on human rights, labour rights, environmental protection and the fight against corruption.

During the meeting, Ban Ki-Moon and Conti also discussed the UN's initiatives on climate change, in view of the meeting on this issue to be held in Cancun in December. Conti explained Enel's commitment in reducing CO2 through innovative technology initiatives (such as pilot programmes for CO2 capture and sequestration, generating power from hydrogen, developing electric cars and smart grids) and expressed his hope that all nations commit to reducing CO2 emissions and adopt an approach that covers all industrial sectors, in order to avoid unbalanced initiatives that could undermine competitiveness. In particular, Conti said that he hopes that no one, such as the European Union, takes unilateral decisions regarding flexible mechanisms such as the Clean Development Mechanism, supervised by the UN, which in recent years have fostered significant investments to improve industrial plant efficiency and to reduce climate-altering gas emissions in countries like India, China, Africa and Brazil.

Secretary-General Ban said that he welcomed Enel's decision to actively support UN programmes and its long-term commitment to building a sustainable approach to development. The Secretary-General also invited Conti to take part in upcoming UN meetings at which representatives of major global companies will discuss sustainability and corporate social responsibility projects.
