If Danish hospitals follow the lead set by hospitals in southern Sweden, they could save up to DKK 163 million annually on energy consumption as well as reducing inpatient time and levels of staff absence due to sickness, concludes a report from the Danish Chamber of Commerce.
A programme of energy renovation in hospitals in southern Sweden has resulted in savings of up to 13% on electricity and up to 30% on heating. The improved indoor climate also brings benefits, which have been confirmed in Denmark with a newly built hospital in Aalborg, where levels of staff absence due to sickness have fallen 35% and the number of infections occurring in the hospital is 18% lower.
If these latter points are factored into the equation, savings in Danish hospitals could be as much as DKK 1 billion annually.
The Danish Chamber of Commerce reckons that all Danish hospitals could experience the same positive effects if they had energy renovation carried out using the ESCO (Energy Services Company) project model, where the costs of the renovation are financed by the savings in energy use achieved as a result of the work carried out.
The news is reported in financial daily newspaper Børsen.
