Yesterday the Austrian energy and utility company EVN AG presented its results for the first three quarters of 2009/2010 (October 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010). In the letter to shareholders, the management board cites the decision of Bulgarian policy makers about the construction of hydropower plants on the Gorna Arda River as one of the ongoing projects. Another successful project on the local market according to the official press-release is the opening of a photovoltaic park in Bulgaria.

The report show an increase of 13.8% in the revenue of the company up to EUR 2.7 billion. In the Energy segment, this was due to the higher electricity sales volumes in Macedonia and increased heating sales volumes in Austria and Bulgaria, the company reports, as well as upward price adjustments necessitated by higher primary energy prices in previous periods. The Environmental Services segment achieved a significant increase in revenue despite the delay in implementing projects resulting from the changed financing situation. On balance, revenue development in the past financial year can be considered as quite satisfactory, the company executives say.

As an objective for future periods, the company wants to generate itself or through long-term purchasing rights 40-60% of the total electricity sales volumes. At present, the coverage ratio is 17.8%, illustrating the extent to which investments will be required, the report says. The importance of exploiting renewable energy sources in expanding EVN’s own power generating capacities is underlined by several wind power projects in Lower Austria and in Eastern and South East Europe, according to the document.
