China is on the road for shale gas exploration
Some local reports estimated that the country may hold up to 30 trillion cubic meters of shale gas

Reuters announced that last week China started its first national shale gas research centre in order to support the local development of this energy sector. According to the report, China is encouraged by the boom in shale natural gas drilling in the USA as well as by the recurring domestic gas shortages. The news agency reminds that early in 2010 a research arm of the Ministry of Land and Resources set a target for the country to identify 50-80 shale gas prospects and 20-30 exploration and development blocks by 2020.

State-owned China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), which runs most gas and oil businesses via listed PetroChina, aims to produce 500 million cubic meters of shale gas by 2015, a deputy general manager said in July, Reuters reminds. Major oil firms have started evaluating potential shale gas deposits in parts of the country though some Chinese reports estimated that the country may hold up to 30 trillion cubic meters of shale gas resources.

Recently Halliburton started drilling for shale gas in Poland. Shale gas could be found in Bulgaria as well, according to US energy companies, which expressed interest to the local market as well.
