The South Korean headquarters of BMW have been raided by police as authorities continue their investigation into the car manufacturer after dozens of reports of engine fires this year. A team of 30 investigators has been sent by Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency to the BMW offices. The aim was to look whether the company hid vehicle defects, the Financial Times reports.

So far this year, about 40 BMW cars have caught fire in South Korea. BMW began recalling about 106,000 vehicles in the country from August 20 after the Korean government banned about 20,000 BMW vehicles from the streets amid mounting public concerns about engine fires.

BMW Korea has blamed the fires on defects in the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and is replacing parts in the recalled cars, which cover 42 models, including the popular 520d and 320d produced between 2011 and 2016. According to the vice-minister of transport, Kim Jong-ryeol, the government was looking into other components and software.

Kim Hyo-joon, head of BMW Korea, has apologised for the problem after videos of the German luxury cars engulfed by flames went viral. BMW buyers in the country have filed a collective lawsuit in Seoul against the German company.
