![]() Australia lays down the first plastic road
New South Wales is the first council which today laid down a 250-meter road made primarily out of recycled plastic bags, CGTN reports. The project for uses the new material – plastiphalt which is made out of plastic bags, glass bottles and old printer cartridges. "Plastic is collected, basically intercepted from going into landfills, it's then processed and attached to other materials to form a special pellet which is then digested into asphalt," General Manager of Downer Jim Appleby stated. The company in charge of the project’s realisation, Downer is a provider of infrastructure-related services, and is collaborating with other Australian companies, namely Close the Loop, RED Group and Plastic Police. The 250 meters section used 220 tonnes of plastiphalt, which came from 176,000 plastic bags and 55,000 glass bottles. According to the company, since plastic does not degrade in the environment, the materials used in the road can be retrieved and used again. "Now it's in the road, in many years' time when that road reaches its end of life it can be dug up and reused in its entirety," Appleby said. Australia is in the process of dealing with a waste management crisis. Measures taken in this direction have been removing disposable bags from supermarkets and transforming recyclable waste into infrastructurе. More than four billion bags are being used in Australia each year, most of which end up in landfills. ![]() No published comments Login to comment |
