UK utility EDF Energy has joined forces with property company Gentoo to improve the energy efficiency of 781 homes in north east England.
Gentoo will carry out part of EDF Energy’s Community Energy Saving Programme (CESP) commitment, a Government programme that obliges utilities to improve the energy efficiency of low-income homes.
The CESP programme sets out targets for utilities in terms of a carbon emissions reduction obligation, with qualifying energy efficiency measures given a specific ‘carbon score’.
Over the lifetime of the programme, which began in September 2009 and will run until December 2012, it is expected to invest around £350 million in energy efficiency measures to help around 90,000 homes.
As one of the UK’s ‘big six’ utilities, EDF Energy is expected to contribute around £65 million over the course of the programme.
As part of that investment, EDF Energy and Gentoo will develop community-based partnerships and promote energy efficiency, as well as installing measures such as insulation and efficient heating systems in selected low-income homes in Sunderland.
Work will start shortly on the effort and is expected to be completed by March next year.
“This is one of the first examples of CESP being put into practice across the whole of the UK,” says Ian Porter, managing director of Gentoo Sunderland. “We would never have been able to even contemplate the works without [EDF Energy’s] support and continuous effort.”
Gentoo Sunderland manages over 30,000 homes in Sunderland and is undertaking a major programme of housing renewal.
