The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) has expressed interest in investing in Bulgarian gas transmission network, the press service of the Council of Ministers announced after a meeting between the Prime Minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borissov and the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
“Only 3% of Bulgaria’s territory has access to natural gas, while the air is polluted due to usage of solid fuels for heating. We set an ambitious goal to expand the utilisation of materials for heating which do not lead to pollution”, PM Borissov said. In Aliev’s words, 93% of Azerbaijan’s territory has access to gas. The country has invested successfully in the development of gas infrastructure in Georgia and can offer its experience and good practices to Bulgaria.
Following the meeting, the energy and economic ministers of both countries are going to develop an investment plan for the gas transmission system in Bulgaria.
President Ilham Aliyev stressed that Azerbaijan and Bulgaria are strategic partners in the realisation of the Southern Gas Corridor project which will guarantee Europe’s energy security. “We expect the construction of the Gas Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) to start in June, and the extension to Turkey to be ready by July. Thus, the delivery of the contracted 1 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually from the Shah Deniz Stage 2 to Bulgaria will be guaranteed”, PM Borissov commented. According to him, social welfare for natural gas heating could be drawn up and provided to the population.
Prime Minister Borissov and President Aliyev discussed the importance of Pan-European Corridors VIII and X, which are going to connect Europe and Asia. The direct Sofia-Baku airline was officially opened today. The new transport link will help business ties between the two countries and strengthen economical, commercial and trade relations.
