The Russian state expert examination authority Glavgosexpertiza issued a positive conclusion after review of the construction project for the world’s first floating nuclear power plant (FNPP) to be built in Russia’s northernmost city of Pevek in Chukotka, the agency said on its website on Tuesday. The builder of the facility is Rosenergoatom, which is part of the Rosatom Electric Power Division. Rosenergoatom.
The FNPP is intended for generation and output of heat and electric power and can also be used for seawater desalination (up to 240 thousand cubic meters of fresh water per day). The floating power unit, equipped with two KLT-40S reactors that are able to produce up to 70 MW of electricity and 50 Gkal / h of heat energy in a nominal operating mode, is designed for operation as part of a floating nuclear thermal power plant, which is sufficient to support the life of a city with a population of about 100 thousand people.
FNPP Academician Lomonosov should replace the outgoing capacity of Bilibino NPP in Chukotka, which currently generates 80% of electricity in the isolated power system. It is planned that it will be put into operation by 2019. The nuclear power plant is expected to go live by 2019 and operate for about forty years.
