![]() Bulgaria: New Energy Coalition to Lobby for Kozloduy NPP to Build New Unit The coalition also expressed its belief that Bulgaria would suffer from insufficient power generation by 2025, contrary to the conclusions of the country’s TSO predicting a surplus of some 10 TWh per year in a decade
A new Bulgarian energy coalition will be lobbying for state-run Kozloduy NPP to pay for and build on its own a planned new nuclear unit. This was announced today by Alexander Nikolov, ex-CEO of Kozloduy NPP and an assistant at the Nuclear Department of the Bulgarian Academy of Science, who is heading the newly-established Energy Future for Bulgaria Coalition. The Coalition is an avid supporter of the idea for the new build to be entirely state-owned and also believes that no foreign capital should be allowed in the Bulgarian nuclear energy sector. In 2012 a state-run project company - Kozloduy NPP New Build - was created for the purpose of planning and possibly executing a new nuclear unit. Nevertheless, one of the main standpoints presented by the Coalitionis also that Kozloduy NPP, a separate legal entity, could actually pay for the loans for a new nuclear unit solely from the profit it would generate. Nikolov estimated that a new unit could generate some BGN 200 – 300 m (EUR 100 – 150 m) annually from selling electricity, basing his assumption on the fact that Kozloduy NPP generates about BGN 130 m per year on average, despite surprisingly lower results last year. The coalition also expressed its belief that Bulgaria would suffer from insufficient power generation by 2025, contrary to the conclusions of the country’s TSO predicting a surplus of some 10 TWh per year in a decade. ![]() No published comments Login to comment |
