Recycling company Ecopack has already launched a pilot project for door-to-door separate waste collection in the Bulgarian town of Svilengrad. The project is carried out in houses rather than large apartment blocks, Todor Burguzhiev, CEO of Ecopack during a press conference in Sofia. The program is expected to cover 1,000 households, up from the current 100, he said.
Burudzhiev said that in 2017 Ecopack will work with 22 new municipalities, with the total number of municipalities covered reaching 64.
“Municipal engagement is key in choosing our partners. We have to convince people that their efforts are worth it, that waste is recicled”, Burgudzhiev said.
He reported that Ecopack has reached a 104 per cent execution of recycling targets in 2016. The company has recycled 64.19 per cent of all packaging produced and declared by its 1226 partner-companies, while the state-set norm was 60%.
Ecopack remains the leading recycling company in Bulgaria with a 42.4% market share.
In 2016 the company has also invested BGN 2.5 m (about EUR 1.25 m) in a new glass separating in Ravno Pole village. Burudzhiev said that there was also interest from neighbouring FYROM and Serbia to use the plant’s capacity.
