The intraday segment of the Independent Bulgarian Energy Exchange (IBEX) is expected to be operational in January 2018, Nikola Gabrovski, project manager at IBEX said during the closing conference on the “Implementation of European power market in Bulgaria – Phase II” Bulgarian-Norwegian project. The event was held by the Bulgarian Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC).

The intraday trading was supposed to kick off in mid-2017, but Gabrovski said that the start date also depends on other market participants such as the Bulgarian TSO – the Electricity System Operator. It is also related to amendments yet to be made to the Bulgaria’s Electricity Trading Rules.

Gabrovski said the supplier of the trading platform has already been chosen, but its name would not be revealed before March, when a contract between IBEX and the supplier would be signed.

In March 2016 Trayport’s GlobalVision Trading System was selected by IBEX as an electronic trading platform for the organization of a centralized market for bilateral contracts in the Bulgarian power market. The day-ahead segment was prepared together with Nordpool Spot.

During his presentation Gabrovski said that there is no short-term alternative for IBEX to join a regional market coupling. This was due to the late start of the day-ahead market which did not allow IBEX to join 4MMC. The Bulgarian energy exchange could however wait for the coupling of 4MMC and MRC.

Nevertheless IBEX envisages to apply the export zone concept as an temporary fix. Gabrovski stressed that the Poland exim zone was still active, as Polish market participants could access the PCR/MRC zone via the cable between Poland and Sweden. The Poland exim zone is expected to remain in force until the full coupling of the country with the MRC.
