Bulgarian energy consumption diminished in 2009
The size of the liberalized electricity market is 15.7% of the total quantities

The Bulgarian Ministry of economy, energy and tourism (MEET) published on its website an outlook of Bulgaria’s energy statistics for 2009. According to the data, the consumption of natural gas in the country diminished last year with 24% in comparison to 2008 reaching 2536 million cub. m.

The industrial consumption of gas was 54%, the energy sector had 39%, the public sector – 5%, and the households – only 2%. The leading industrial consumer was the chemical industry with 64% of the quantities followed by the glass and porcelain industry with 12%, the metallurgy with 10%, construction with 3% and others – 11%. Among the energy consumers the leading ones were district heating companies with 68%, and the cogeneration industrial plants had 32% of the quantities.

In 2009 the coal production was 27.2 million tons or 5.5% less than in 2008. Most of the production was lignite with 92.3% of the total quantities.

In 2009 the electricity produced was 43 terawatt hours, which is 4.2% less than the production in 2008. The export is 11.8% of the total quantities or 5.1 TWh. The energy source with the highest rate of growth is wind – in 2009 it produced 233.6 GWh or 91.2% more than in 2008. The end consumption of electricity diminished with 5.3% down to 28.3 TWh of which 63.2% is business/public sector and households consumed 36.8%. The size of the liberalized market in terms of quantities is 15.7%.

According to the data of MEET, the total energy dependence of Bulgaria rose from 51.8% in 2007 to 52.5% in 2008.
