Even though Turkey and Russia signed an intergovernmental agreement for the construction of planned gas pipeline Turkish Stream last week, the project remains unfeasible, Bulgarian ex-energy minister and current chairman of the parliamentary energy commission Delyan Dobrev told Publics.bg in an interview. In Dobrev’s view the project is rather geared towards feeding Russian natural gas to Turkey, than to Europe.

„This is a project to secure gas for Turkey, not transit to Europe. Last Wednesday a reduction of the capacity of this pipeline was announced. It will consist of just one pipe, compared to the four planned in South Stream. This means that, even if Turkish Stream is realized with one or two pipes, it will be a project to supply Turkey rather than Europe via Turkey, as was first announced. The latter, as I have affirmed earlier, is not supported by economic logic, and I still consider this to be correct“, Dobrev said.
Dobrev cited statements by government representatives that the pipeline would be built following an assessment of Turkey’s demand for Russian gas. He added that, if potential oversupply could be transited towards Europe, once the Southern Gas Corridor is built.

“Turkey has an extensive gas transmission system and gas could effectively be sold to its neighbouring countries. Nevertheless, the construction of a pipeline with a 63 bn cub. m yearly capacity to supply Europe [through Turkey] is no longer an option”, Dobrev stated.
