The demand for natural gas in Bulgaria is to grow significantly with some 40 per cent by 2025, Bulgarian state-owned gas transport grid operator Bulgartransgaz said in its report for the grid development over the next 10 years. The report was presented today at the headquarters of the Bulgarian Energy and Water Regulatory Commission.

Bulgartransgaz foresees that natural gas demand will increase from 3.1 bn cub. m/y (2014) to more than 4.2 bn cub. m/y in 2025. The gas transport grid operator based its estimates on a stable 2 – 3 per cent GDP growth per year, as well as a bigger share of natural gas in primary energy consumption – 19 per cent in 2025, compared to 12 per cent in 2014.

The report describes and stresses the importance of all major gas infrastructure projects in the region, such as the TAP gas pipeline project, and gas interconnectors underway with Greece, Romania, Serbia and Turkey.

BGN 1 bn (about EUR 500 m) is the planned investment Budget of Bulgartransgaz for the 10 years ahead. Bulgartransgaz will be investing heavily in the extension of the country's sole underground gas storage at Chiren, as well as in the modernisation of compressor stations and further expansion of the gas grid.
