European climate and energy commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete estimated highly Bulgaria’s efforts to diversify gas supplies. Cañete was on a visit today in Sofia to meet with Bulgarian PM Boiko Borisov and his deputy Tomislav Dontchev. The development of the Energy union and Bulgaria’s options for sustainable energy supplies were part of the meeting’s agenda, as announced by the press centre of the Bulgarian Council of Ministers.

“Bulgaria has a very strong potential to become leader with the construction of an European and Balkan gas hub. You have a very well built and working gas transport network”, Cañete said, expressing the EC’s appreciation of Bulgaria’s efforts to diversify gas supplies.

Cañete also gave guarantees that the EU will support the gas hub project, if it complies with European legislation, BNR reported.

“We will support all other infrastructure which complies with the requirements and the laws of the EU. There are apparent possibilities and potential for Bulgaria to be an exclusively key player for the gas system of the entirety of Europe. You have the support of the EU. We built up the idea, worked for an year and we will have a real gas hub, it will become reality”, Cañete said.
