Germany’s first offshore wind farm, Alpha Ventus, was commissioned Tuesday at a ceremony in Norddeich. Participating in the ceremony were Federal Environment Minister Norbert Röttgen and the heads of Vattenfall Europe, EWE, and E.ON. This was announced in statement by Vattenfall

Alpha Ventus, the first German offshore wind farm, is a pilot project 45 kilometres off the coast of the island of Borkum. It was constructed by a consortium of RWE, E.ON and Vattenfall Europe, who together have invested EUR 250 million to bring this project to its successful completion.

At commissioning ceremony Federal Environment Minister Norbert Röttgen said that Germany’s goal is an installed offshore capacity of 25 000 MW by the year 2030. Power generation from wind is an essential building block of Vattenfall’s strategy to make our electricity generation carbon neutral by 2050.”

A total of twelve, 5 megawatt-class wind power turbines have been erected in the Alpha Ventus test field. In addition, two types of steel foundations were used to support the wind power turbines. This is the first time such turbines have been erected and operated offshore in waters 30 metres deep.

Alpha Ventus also serves as a test field for research projects concerned with nature conservation, aided by the Federal Ministry for the Environment. The wind farm will provide knowledge as regards the utilization and the further development of offshore wind power.
