75 nations, the European Union, Euratom, and the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS), a regional group of sixteen countries have signed the International Energy Charter in The Hague.
For many of the new signatories, this will mark the first step towards accession to the Energy Charter Treaty, although a number of nations, notably Nigeria, an OPEC member, have entered the Charter at Treaty level. China, represented at the conference by Mr. Nuer Baikel, Minister of Energy, notably signed the IEC, EUtoday.net reported.
Russia did not send a delegation to The Hague, to the disappointment of many, who see Russia as a major actor in the future development of global energy governance.
Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President of the European Commission, who is guiding the energy union process, signed on behalf of the EU.
Bulgarian energy minister Ms. Temenuzhka Petkova also attended the event and signed the Charter. Following the official ceremony, Ms. Petkova met with Dr. Urban Rusnák, Secretary General of the Brussels based Energy Charter Secretariat, with whom she discussed long-term energy diversification. She presented the development of gas interconnectors between Bulgaria and neighbor-countries.
