On February 12, 2015, Deputy Energy minister Nikolay Nikolov and the Director of the Security of Supply Directorate at the energy ministry Dimitar Kuyumdzhiev visited ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP.

On site, the Senior Management of the company presented the history, achievements and operational performance of Maritsa East 3 Power Station. The guests were shown the results of the large scale Rehabilitation and Modernization Project (2003-2009), which transformed the old power plant into a modern and fully compliant facility. The main goals of the Rehabilitation were increasing the efficiency and the capacity of the power plant, extending its operational life and, most importantly, bringing it in line with European environmental standards.  More than EUR 650 million was invested in the project, a significant part of which was earmarked for environmental improvements, such as two FGDs, two water treatment plants and etc. As a result, in 2009 ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 TPP became the first lignite TPP on the Balkans to operate in full compliance with the latest EU environmental standards.  Today, the power plant provides around 10% of the installed energy capacity in Bulgaria.

Deputy Minister Nikolov was also informed about some of the additional improvements in the plant made after its Rehabilitation, namely the NOx Reducing Project. It will assure compliance with the new environmental requirements of the EU (Directive 75/2010), which are expected to come into force in 2016.

Currently three out of the four units of the plant are modernised, thus reducing their NOx emissions far below the required levels of 130 and 180 mg/Nm3, with primary measures only. The last unit of the plant will be modernised in 2015. In addition the Integrated Health & Safety and Environmental Management systems certified ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 have been implemented.

Accompanied by the hosts, deputy-minister Nikolov visited some of the main facilities of the plant and had the opportunity to get acquainted with the main operational processes.
