By end-January, 2012, Sofia Municipality will prepare the concept for the implementation and maintenance of a new system for street lighting, Sofia mayor Yordanka Fandakova announced yesterday.

The decision comes after Bulgaria’s capital city joined the Covenant of Mayors which means that the city should prepare a Sustainable Energy Plan, street lights being an important part of it. An expert team is preparing a project application for the Kozloduy fund, which enables Bulgaria to get compensation for shutting down its nuclear units at the country’s sole nuclear plant. The financial compensation is aimed at energy efficiency and renewables projects.
