Kozloduy NPP – New Build EAD, the state-controlled project company entitled to work on new nuclear units in Bulgaria, was granted permission by the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRA) to select the location of a planned nuclear generation facility. Kozloduy NPP - New Build’s CEO Mr. Valentin Iliev received the permit on August 28 from NRA’s chairman Mr. Lachezar Kostov.

The project company applied for site selection permit on December 13, 2012. The possibility to build a new nuclear station at or near the site of Bulgaria’s sole nuclear station at Kozloduy was launched by the previous government of center-right party GERB in April 2012, after a much disputed decision to cancel the delayed Belene nuclear station project.

“NRA’s official permission marks the beginning of the actual technical aspect of the licensing procedure for the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Bulgaria. This permit is compliant with the Safe Use of Nuclear Energy Act and the Regulation on the Procedure for Issuing Licenses and Permits for Safe Use of Nuclear Energy. The location to be selected by Kozloduy NPP - New Build EAD is to be further assessed in order to be approved by the NRA”, an official statement from the project company read.

According to the permit, Kozloduy NPP - New Build EAD is entitled to carry out all engineering research and investigation for forging the basic project concepts and preparing safety assessments, and subsequently, for the approval of the selected construction site.
