France wants threats from airplane crashes and terrorists excluded from safety checks planned on European reactors after the Fukushima nuclear accident, a Bloomberg publication says. “If they are included then this can’t be called ‘lessons learned from Japan,’” Andre-Claude Lacoste, head of the Autorite de Surete Nucleaire, said yesterday in an interview after a briefing in Paris. “I will do what I can to keep risks from planes and terrorism out of the audits.”
 
The tests of the EU reactors may cover threats from earthquakes, floods, plane crashes and terrorists as well as the age of reactors and the effectiveness of their cooling systems, EU officials said last week.
Industry Minister Eric Besson has said reactors will remain a “fundamental” source of energy. French nuclear safety officials including ASN Commissioner Jean-Jacques Dumont have said agreeing on common criteria for the checks will be difficult.
