3 Out of 7 Cold Reserve Power Plants Engaged for Winter 2017 Had Failures in 2016
Two of these were in the top 3 contracted to provide the most cold reserve capacity during the past winter

Seven power plants will be providing cold reserve in the upcoming winter season, tenders data of Bulgaria’s Electricity System Operator (ESO) show. These are Bobov Dol TPP, Maritsa 3 Dimitrovgrad TPP, Biovet, Brikel, Toplofikatsia Pernik, Toplofikatsia Ruse and Bulgaria’s largest TPP, the state-run Maritsa East 2.

Meanwhile Maritsa East 2 TPP was contracted to provide the biggest capacity (873,600 MWh), followed by Bobov Dol TPP (738,192 MWh), then Toplofikatsia Ruse (401,856 MWh), Maritsa 3 TPP (393,120 MWh), Brikel (174,720 MWh), Biovet (78,624 MWh).

They are to provide net availability capacity of up to 700 MW from one or more entire units for cold reserve from 00.00h EET on October 1 2017 until 24.00 h EET on March 31 2018.

Meanwhile, three out of the six power plants contracted in 2016 that suffered technical failures, freezing of coal and freezing of the Danube River, also qualified for 2017. These are Bobov Dol TPP, Toplofikatsia Ruse and Maritsa 3 TPP .
