Bulgaria will have to face a lack of nuclear energy specialists as early as 2025, data gathered by Kozloduy NPP – Bulgaria’s sole operating nuclear power plant showed. The alarming forecast is based on the assumption that the tendency of fewer students in technical nuclear programmes would persist, with the potential to undermine the planned construction of new nuclear generations in Bulgaria, Lyuben Marinov, CEO of the Kozloduy NPP –New Build company, said during a press conference as part of the Bulatom forum held in Varna, Bulgaria.
“Currently in Bulgaria there are a mere 80 people enrolled in university programmes related to nuclear energy. Meanwhile, the operation of just one nuclear unit calls for the employment of 380 specialists”, Marinov said.
Marinov went on to explain that a special staff incubator is to be set up in order to deal with the impending issue. He blamed the decrease of trained staff mostly on the organisations within the nuclear sector itself.
Lyuben Marinov warned that Bulgaria’s NRA might not issue an exploitation permit to the planned new nuclear unit at Kozloduy NPP, if there are not enough qualified experts to work there.
