Basel’s Transport Authority (BVB) sign contract with Bombardier Transportation for 60 Bombardier Flexity trams valued at approximately 222 million Swiss francs (184 million euro).The first new trams will go into operation in time for the opening of the extension of tram line number eight to German town - Weil am Rhein, in 2013 year. From 2014 year, two new FLEXITY trams will be delivered to Basel every month, subject to confirmation by the legislature of the Swiss canton Basel-Stadt
The new vehicles are available in two lengths: 17 are five-module tram 31.8 m long and have a capacity of 183 passengers, 43 are the seven-module vehicle 43.2 m long with space for 254 passengers. The new trams are 100% low floor and has 30% lower energy consummation and recuperating braking. The new trams will be manufactured in Bautzen, Germany and in Vienna, Austria.They will replace 101 trams currently in service in Basel.
