The U.S. to Provide Assistance to Bulgaria in Forging Its Energy Future
Secretary of State John Kerry talked energy, security and legislation with Bulgarian PM Boyko Borissov

Energy diversification and the preparation of a plan for the development of Bulgaria’s energy future, along with security and legislation, were among the main topics discussed by U.S. Secretary of State and Bulgarian PM Boyko Borissov, during Kerry’s visit to Sofia on Thursday.

During a briefing following their meeting, Kerry stated that no country should be fully dependent on another for its energy supply, adding that the U.S. and the EU would assist Sofia in taking tough decisions regarding its energy future.

Therefore, the U.S. will send an energy expert to work with Bulgaria’s Ministry of Energy for developing a development plan for the energy sector.

PM Borissov said that U.S. company Westinghouse, which was selected to provide the reactor technology for Bulgaria’s planned new units at Kozloduy NPP, should become an investor in the project. A workgroup for the purpose has already been constituted, with the U.S. Exim bank expected to propose ways of financing the project, Borissov affirmed.

While Borissov presented the project for a gas interconnector with Greece and a possible gas hub at the Bulgarian-Turkish border, the PM stressed that the ban on shale gas research and exploration will remain in place, until a technology that guarantees environmental safety is found.

The ban was imposed by Borissov in 2012 during his first term as prime-minister. U.S. oil major Chevron, which was expected to start research for shale gas somewhere in 2015, decided to pull out of the country.
